Discover over 200 years of unique history hidden within the walls of the Redoubt Fortress. 

Reveal the stories behind the Faces of the Fort, follow the brand new Augmented Reality trail using our new app for phones and tablets, and unlock some of the fortress' hidden secrets.

One of the south coast's most historic landmarks, this Georgian Fortress was built to defend against Napoleon.  It continued as a working fortress for many years, also used during World Wars I & II by Military Police, Home Guard and Canadian forces.

The Redoubt Fortress opens daily from 19 March to 4 November 2018.

Entry is free to the Parade Ground, Gun Platform, The Outpost cafe and gift shop.

Great for Kids

Let the kids loose with our new Augmented Reality app for picture puzzles and cannon shooting fun, or experience life in the Victorian school room with slate chalk boards and an abacus!

Try on a Napoleonic officers uniform or a WW1 soldier's helmet and create your own arts and crafts in the Resource Room.  With school holiday events and seasonal trails there is plenty to keep the kids entertained.

Opening Times & Prices

The Redoubt Fortress is open from 10am to 5pm every day from 19 March to 4 November 2018.

Entry costs £4.50 per adult (senior/student £3.25).

Up to 2 CHILDREN GO FREE with a full paying adult.

Price includes FREE daily tour!

Daily Tours

Join the daily guided tour (included with admission) at 11am and 2.30pm every day, lastings 30 minutes. Longer tours run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

School Holidays

The Redoubt runs childrens events and trails most school holidays, from the popular Science week to our spooktacular Halloween trail throughout our creepy corridors . Workshops must be booked in advance, however trails can be collected on the day from reception.

Getting to the Redoubt Fortress


Via Prom - Located by the beach, why not pop in through the main seafront entrance while you stroll the promenade to explore The Pavilion gardens, Azimuth sculpture and the Redoubt's parade ground.

Via Royal Parade - The Redoubt Fortress entrance from here crosses the moat with direct access to the gun platform. Please note there are a large number of steps from here to the Parade Ground.

From the A22, A27 & A259 (east)

Follow signs to Eastbourne seafront. At the large seafront roundabout (Sovereign Centre) turn right and continue for 3/4 mile. The Redoubt is located on the left after Treasure Island car park and bowling greens.

From the A259 (west)

Follow signs to Eastbourne seafront to the Pier, continue past the Pier for another 1/2 mile and the Redoubt is located on the right after the Pavilion.

Car Parking

Free on-street parking is available on Royal Parade, or a Pay & Display car park is nearby at Treasure Island. There are also 3 disabled parking bays on Royal Parade.


Please note there are a large number of stairs in places.  Due to the historical nature of the Redoubt Fortress building, the only wheelchair access to the Parade Ground and building interior is by pre-booking a stairclimber at the seafront promenade entrance. Please telephone 01323 410300 to pre-book.

The gun platform can be accessed from Royal Parade without steps.  There are a large number of steps from here down to the Parade Ground.

There are 3 disabled parking bays on Royal Parade.

Public Transport


Stagecoach Buses 1, 1A, IX, the Loop, and 55 all stop on Seaside Road, just a 10 minute walk away. Bus 99 stops on Royal Parade close to the Pavilion.

Dotto Train

The seafront Dotto Train, running from Holywell to Sovereign Harbour during the summer, also stops next door at the fortress.


Southern Railway services run into Eastbourne with up to 3 trains per hour from London Victoria, plus services from Lewes, Brighton, Hastings and Ashford International.
