Archaeology and Local History
From Anglo-Saxon festivals to archaeological digs and beyond!
Heritage Eastbourne can offer so much for you to get involved with.
Each year we undertake archaeological investigations and excavations in the Eastbourne area, examining our rich heritage from ancient Bronze Age Barrows to Victorian rubbish pits. Each project offers volunteers either a chance to get down and dirty in a trench or to get involved with the revealing and slightly less mucky work of finds washing and analysis (or a bit of both).
In return for voluntary help, full training will be given or experience gained which can be very valuable for anybody looking for a career in heritage, or just taking up a fascinating and worthwhile hobby.
We have extensive collections within Heritage Eastbourne made up from all of the finds from the last 50 or so years of excavation and discovery in the Eastbourne area including flint tools made 100000 years ago to ornate Saxon glass beakers.
Researchers can contact Heritage Eastbourne for access to these archives by appointment.Contact Us
Visit us or we can come and see you!
We love working with schools and run a great outreach programme as well as school visits to the Redoubt. All education resources are tailored to meet the national curriculum using our excellent collections to cover subjects from pre-history to World War II.
We visit schools in the East Sussex area to run discussion based outreach sessions bringing the museum to you, exploring and uncovering the story of Eastbourne and the surrounding area.
We can bring artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Saxons, Tudors, Victorians, World War One and Two and a variety of things in between all from the Eastbourne area.
We also offer practical activities including, for the Saxons – shoe making, pottery making and fire making (lots of fun and not nearly as dangerous as it sounds!) as well as Stone Age weaving. Each session is tailored to your needs and requirements.
If you would like to arrange a class tour of the Redoubt Fortress or require outreach sessions please contact us for more details.
